Oils that contain a high level of omega-3 and fatty acids such as fish oil helps to keep the skin healthy, a deficiency of these oil makes the skin dry and dull.
  • Hydration- Getting enough water is important for cats to stay hydrated and keeps the skin free from dryness. The dehydration in cats can also be caused due to weather change as dry air can affect the cat’s coat and skin. As season changes, it is necessary to take early precautions so that the cats do not get dandruff
  • Parasites- Parasites like worms, flea and mites are responsible for dermatology reactions in cats. Bites from mites and fleas generate allergic reactions which lead to excessive itching and dandruff. If left untreated, these parasites can cause severe health issues.
  • Allergies- Food and environmental changes result in an allergic reaction which ultimately causes dandruff.   • Hot and dry weather makes the skin of your cat dry and itchy. Cats with thin or no coats can have damaged skin due to weather changes. It is essential to keep your cat out of hot and dry weather. Mostly in dry winter months, cats have more chances of having a flaky skin.

  • Special Shampoo- Since cats only need to bathe themselves when they are dirty and muddy, be careful using the right shampoo for their skin. Certain shampoos make the skin of cats dry. Choosing a moisturizing shampoo will prevent your cat from getting fleas and dandruff. Make sure to remove all the excess shampoo that may lead to creating dandruff.

Cat Dandruff vs. Dander:

Many pet owners often get confused between dandruff and dander and assume that both are same. But both dander and dandruff are two different skin sheds found in cats. Cat dandruff is visible whereas dander is microscopic pieces of dry skin that becomes transported by air. Cats produce a protein known as Fel d 1 which is contained in skin cells, urine and saliva. As cats dander is airborne its gets collected on the bedding, curtains, carpets and also onto the human’s skin. Some people become allergic to cat’s dander and when they are challenged by this allergen their immune system deal with the allergen to be an intruder.

The cat’s dander affects people in the following ways-

  • When a cats dander is inhaled through the nose the reaction would be sneezing or a chronic reaction which is known as hay fever which includes sneezing with a runny nose, itching inside the nose, sinus and nasal congestion.
