dove vs pegion

When we talk about dove and pigeon difference, a general perception comes to mind: dove is a cute, peaceful, and soft-looking white bird while a pigeon is a fierce and street bird that can be found in grey, blue, brown colors but not in white colors. Both pigeon and dove are the members of the Columbidae family, which consists of more than 300 species.

Are Pigeons and Doves the Same Thing?

Mostly, both the birds are often confused with each other because they share the same features, like thick and round bodies, short necks, and thin beaks, but pigeon is considered to be larger in size and dove to be comparatively smaller.

Difference Between Dove and Pigeon:

Following are the distinguishes features between these two different species-

Appearance:

Belonging to the same family of birds, their functions are quite similar. They both have compact bodies, rounded heads, with short necks, and thin beaks. They have a slight difference in their appearance and their tale and size. Doves comprise a big tail. However, its size is smaller than pigeons.

Pigeon Size:

Contrary to this, the smallest dove is as tiny as a hummingbird and weighs just 22 grams. The weight of the other species varies from the largest pigeon to the smallest dove. Moreover, the color of their feathers varies according to their type.

Food and Predators-

Seeds and fruits are the main diets of both pigeon and dove. However, there are types of dove that feed on insects and worms. Peregrine falcons are considered to be the hunter of pigeons that prey on the birds with their peak dive velocity. Besides, they are preyed on by other big birds and hawks.

Likewise, doves are a source of food for falcons and hawks, and sometimes rats and snakes happen to eat their eggs. Similarly, humans are one of their predators as well.

  • Both dove and pigeons are adaptive to all types of environments, whether the place is an island or a desert.
  • Habitat can be different for different species. They find suitable habitat in the cities and towns.
  • They can make a group containing 50 to 500 birds when they fly.
  • Pigeons are considered to be intelligent birds and can quickly be brought under control when kept as pets.
  • Both males and females can feed the baby pigeon with their crop milk.
  • Both the species make different and musical sounds.
  • Their calls can be varied in changed situations, such as making the sound of ‘oorh’ when the case is alarming.
  • Moreover, they make the ‘coo’ sounds from their nests.

Dove Nesting:

Most Doves build their nests on the branches of highly dense trees like Orchard Tree, Vine Tree, Mesquite Tree Cottonwood Tree, etc.

Pigeon Nesting:

Pigeons also prefer to build their nests on high and dense trees, but they even live comfortably near humans and can be seen making nests in wall holes or on other height corners or some other reliable and safe places.

Dove Reproduction:

Doves have a mate for life. The females always lay two eggs at a time. So it took a period of 8 to 10 days for egg-laying after the mating process. After putting eggs, it takes an additional 18 to 20 days for the hatching of the eggs.

Pigeon’s Reproduction:

According to reports, ten pairs of Pigeons can have eight young pigeons in just one month. The females can lay more than two eggs, but they put only two eggs in a single nest, so for faster laying process, the females must be provided more than one nest.

Mourning Dove vs Pigeon:

The mourning dove also is known as the American Mourning Dove. However, Rain Dove is the most popular breed of pigeon. A Mourning dove is generally medium-sized and has light grey and brown body color. Their beak is short and dark.

The white-crowned pigeon is similar to the size of a common Rock pigeon but weighs a little less because it has the lesser wingspan, smaller meat, and a longer tail. They are distinguished by a beautiful white crown on the head and a white iris.

Dove Versus Pigeon: Who Would Win?

It is tough to tell who would win between Pigeons and Dove. Both birds are similar and have the same abilities. Also, they are very identical in size. The pigeons can use their strong beak to attack, and their sharp claws can be very dangerous. Whereas, a dove can only use its defensive aptitude to protect itself and can strike back using its claws.

Pigeons are very adaptive to hunt as compared to dove so that the pigeons can be very dangerous. Still, simultaneously, doves can use intelligence and power together and can escape the attacks of pigeon and can also attack back. In conclusion, dove and pigeon both can be equally dangerous, and it is impossible to predict who will win.
