The Barbary lion was native to North Africa. In the eastern area, the population was found less because of the arid-ness. But by the 18th century, they completely disappeared from the eastern range, and a stray population lived in the Atlas mountain range. The preferred barbary lion habitat is mountains and forested regions.

The Barbary lion’s diet includes antelopes, pigs, deer, buffalo, wild boar, and domesticated animals. Barbary lions were solitary animals and only came together to mate during the breeding season, which is believed to be January. Records have shown that the gestation period in females lasted for 110 days. They used to deliver 2 to 6 cubs per litter, and each cub weighed around 1.5 to 1.7 kilograms. The cubs were heavily spotted with dark rosettes. They opened their eyes after six days and were able to walk after 12 to 13 days. The cubs used to stay with their mother until the age of two years.

  • In the early 19th and 20th century these lions were used to keep in circus and hotels.

  • The Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie had a collection of Barbary lions kept in the Addis Ababa Zoo.

How Long Do Barbary Lions Live?

The average lifespan of these lions was from 12 to 15 years. 

Are Barbary Lions Extinct?

It is assumed that the population of Barbary lions gradually decreases in the mid of the 19th century. Hunting was the primary threat and the major cause of their extinction. However, climatic changes with the increase in the human settlement also added another threat to these subspecies. Deforestation and lack of food sources also cause a decline in their numbers. The official records suggest that the last Barbary lion was shot in the western Maghreb in 1942. However, some sub-species were seen in Algeria and Morocco until 1950; it was believed that the remaining population survived until 1960.

The Tigers are native to Asia, depending on their subspecies, these large cats can be found in a different habitat. Like the Siberian Tiger prefers to live in the northern, cold regions of Russia and China. The smaller subspecies survive in warmer countries like India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Indonesia. The various environments in which they live include forests, flooded mangrove forests, tropical forests, and taiga.

How Long Can a Tiger Grow? 

The largest subspecies of the Tiger are the Siberian or the Amur tiger, which can measure 10.75 feet long and weigh up to 660 pounds. However, the smallest tiger subspecies are the Sumatran Tiger that weighs from 165 to 308 pounds. The long tail of tigers adds another 3 feet to their length. And the claws of tigers grow up to 4 inches long, which they use to grab and hold their prey. 

What Does A Tiger Eat?

All the tiger subspecies are carnivorous, and their diet consists of large animals such as pigs, deer, and rhinoceros. To kill its prey, the Tiger grabs the animal’s neck with its jaw and suffocates them. These animals’ teeth have pressure sensing nerves, which help them to bite in the exact position.  

Tiger Reproduction:

The Tigers are generally solitary animals and only come together to mate. The females can deliver seven cubs at a time, but not all the cubs make it to their age of two. The cubs are ready to learn how to hunt and go with their mothers on hunting when they are eight weeks old.
